Jeff Walker Wins!!!

Herald Review

Jeff Walker is announcing his candidacy for the office of Itasca County Auditor.
Walker is a Certified Public Accountant and has lived and worked in Itasca County for the past 25 years. He has extensive experience in public, corporate, and municipal accounting and finance.
After graduating from high school, Walker enlisted in the US Air Force where he spent four years serving his country, receiving an honorable discharge. He then attended St. Cloud University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in accounting. During the next three years he worked for Thorson, Campbell, et al, a public accounting firm in St. Louis Park. The firm specialized in municipal audits and contractor accounting and taxation. In 1981, the Rajala Companies hired him as their corporate controller overseeing their financial interests. Since 1986, he has been involved in his own public accounting firm as well as other companies in the area.
“While at the Rajala Companies, I learned a great deal about the area and its residents. I met many of the loggers and truckers throughout the county and Jack Rajala taught me about the wood industry in northern Minnesota. If you are going to run for this office, you need to understand the local economy and how everyday people make their living,” stated Walker.
Jeff and his wife Anne have been married for 27 years. They have raised four children; Bridget (Jason) Grell, Molly, Rory, and Kevin Walker, and have two grandchildren.
“Anne and I are proud to be residents of the area,” Walker said. “Itasca County is a great place to raise a family”.
Civic duty has also been very important to Walker. He spent eight years on the Cohasset City Council, including four years as its mayor. As mayor, he sat on many local boards including the Range Area Mayors Association (RAMS), the Cohasset Planning Commission, Public Utilities Commission, Economic Development Authority, and many others.
“The time spent on civic matters has offered me a chance to do something positive for the area. I hope to give others a sense of duty toward their community,” Walker said.
Youth activities continue to be an interest to Walker. He coached Little League baseball for six years and was very involved in building the Portage Park and Tioga Beach facilities in Cohasset.
“Keeping our youth active is a priority in our community, and our low juvenile crime rate can be attributed to the attention spent with our kids on the sports field and in our schools,” said Walker.
With over 25 years in the accounting and finance profession, Walker states he is well aware of the responsibilities related to the office of county auditor.
“When dealing with a budget the size of Itasca County, it is very important to have someone with experience,” Walker continued. “Facing potential decreases in taxing capacity, inflation, staffing concerns, and state mandates, county government must find ways to deliver services in an efficient manner in order to keep the cost of government at reasonable levels. The county needs someone who understands all the various functions within the auditor’s office; someone who can perform these functions and supervise a large staff. I will spend the next four months trying to convince the voters of Itasca County that we need a county auditor with a strong accounting and finance background in order to advise the county commissioners in these matters. Also, I hope to persuade the voters that I am the best suited candidate for this position.”
